British International School of Zagreb (BISZ) - Mathematics

Mathematics holds a central position within the BISZ curriculum. It is considered a core subject throughout all educational stages and plays a vital role in developing the analytical, logical, and problem-solving abilities that underpin success in many academic disciplines and professional fields.

Curriculum Structure
The mathematics curriculum at BISZ is designed to follow the British Key Stage system, which provides a progressive structure leading from foundational knowledge to advanced abstract reasoning:

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9): Students build on basic arithmetic and algebraic understanding from primary education, focusing on number operations, geometry, algebra, probability, and statistics. Emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding, pattern recognition, and developing confidence in handling numbers and equations.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11): Students prepare for the Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics examinations. The IGCSE course aims to provide a strong grounding in essential mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and introductory calculus. Problem-solving and real-world applications are key components, ensuring students not only memorise procedures but also understand how to apply them.

Key Stage 5 (Years 12–13): At the sixth-form level, mathematics becomes an elective subject through AS and A-Level Mathematics. Students who choose this pathway study topics such as pure mathematics, mechanics, and statistics at a much deeper level. The A-Level programme prepares students for university study, particularly in disciplines such as engineering, economics, computer science, and the natural sciences.

In a world driven by innovation and data, mathematics is the foundation for future success. At the British International School of Zagreb (BISZ), we prepare students to think critically, reason logically, and approach problems with creativity and confidence.
